Bundling Employee Resourcing and Talent Management; with practical examples

Talent Management

"Talent management is the systematic attraction, identification, development, engagement, retention, and deployment of those individuals who are valuable to an organization, because of their potential or the critical role they have"(Quilliam,2023)

Bundling employee resourcing and talent management can be identified as a strategic approach for the organization. This integration increases the efficiency and effectiveness of employees via managing the human capital of the organization which ultimately gives benefits to the company. Aligning resourcing with talent management is crucial to the business and here are some steps that can be taken to achieve this strategy.

To effectively manage talent within a company, it's important to identify key qualities in employees such as innovation, decision-making skills, positive attitude, and leadership skills. A talent management plan should be developed once the right talent has been identified. This plan should consider four key aspects (Kasun,2021): 1. Identifying the talent needed for the business. 2. Determining methods to measure employee potential. 3. Assessing both current performance and potential performance levels. 4. Developing and monitoring individuals identified as talents.

How does Google manage its talents from the point of resourcing?

My previous article "Employee Resourcing Concept" explains Google's strategies for employee resourcing. After successfully resourcing employees, they gradually develop employee capabilities via employee capability development programs, Inclusive reward framework & retention through culture and community.

In 2024, the Talent Management Institute has identified below key findings from Google's talent management books.

  • Peer Learning Culture - "Googler-to-Googler" is the latest model that allows any employee passionate about a topic, coding, public speaking, or guitar to conduct classes attended by colleagues globally. This peer learning culture is a significant part of its talent management strategy, contributing to the company's success by ensuring its workforce remains highly skilled, motivated, and innovative.

  • Specialist Development Through Certifications - By continuously plugging bottom-up initiatives to fill Google's talent gaps & to slow down external hiring. This culture uplifts capability building as a collaborative, continuous responsibility, eventually uplifting Google's competitive advantage.
Other than Google; Spotify’s Guilds and Chapters, Valve’s Flat Management and Learning         Culture, and Red Hat’s Open Source Learning Approach are also using these modern methods of talent management strategies for organizational betterment.

Importance of Bundling Employee Resourcing and Talent Management

Best talent is one of the competitive advantages for every organization. Bundling these two together it ensures the employee retention, and development of the organization while enhancing employee engagement, efficiency, effectiveness, and overall performance. Further, inspiring employees who feel genuinely invested in beyond transactional compliance is likely to support constantly which can fosters a stronger connection to the organization and enhances overall job satisfaction.

Application of  Google's Strategies to the Banking Sector

01. Peer Learning Culture

Most of the private banks in Sri Lanka such as DFCC, NTB, Commercial & Sampath has this pear learning culture but with different names.

Example: DFCC & Sampath Banks called this a "Buddy Concept"
                NTB has a "Mentor Concept"

However, the expectations of all these banks are the same. An experienced senior is assigned to the newly recruited staff member for the whole 01 month of period to support, guide, and to introduce all the policies, practices, and most importantly culture of the bank.

02. Specialist Development Through Certifications

Below banks are using unique certification courses to their employees in category wise in order to develop their skills and knowledge in specific areas.

Example:
Sampath Bank - "Certified Credit Practitioner programme" . This programme conducted in partnership with the Institute of Banking Studies for all credit officers in bank (Annual Report, 2023)

DFCC Bank - "Credit Certification programme" - This is a mandatory programme for all credit                                                                                               officers in the bank
                     - "OIC Certification programme"  - This is a mandatory programme for all Officers In                                                                                      Charge in cash related operations in the bank
                                                                                (Annual Report, 2022)
